Eyelid Lift – A Common Facial Plastic Surgery Procedure
Eyelid lift or blepharoplasty is a common facial plastic surgery procedure. The result of the surgery is a younger looking man or woman. In blepharoplasty, the plastic surgeon would remove extra skin, fat and/or muscle from both eyelids to redefine eye contour. A person may opt for an eyelid lift to correct or reduce one or more of the following conditions:
• Ptosis – drooping or sagging of the top eyelids
• Too much eyelid drooping which is hindering proper eyesight
• Bags beneath the eyes
• Puffiness
• Fine wrinkles and surplus skin of the lower eyelid
Procedure for Eyelid Lift
The procedure would usually be carried out when the patient is awake. Medication, either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, would be administered. Incisions are made in such a way that the consequent scarring is nicely concealed from view. For upper eyelid conditions, the incision would be contained in the natural structures of the eyelid region. For lower eyelid problems, the incisions would be made just under the lower lash line. An alternate method is transconjunctival incision, which is well concealed within the lower eyelid. Following the incision process, fat and skin would be taken out or repositioned, and tissue and muscles tightened, if and as required in the particular case.
Sutures, surgical tape or skin adhesives may be used to close the incisions. Probable complications from blepharoplasty include bleeding, temporary blurred or double vision, minute whiteheads, asymmetry, stinging or burning feeling, swelling, difficulties in eye closure, and dryness.
